A Pre-Recorded Panel Discussion for School and Community Members speaking about the use of Social Media and the prevalence of anxiety on teens as well as offering coping strategies.

Michelle Gates one of the school counselors at Keene high school as a follow-up to our film series for like in tanks we have a pre-recorded panel discussion of school and community members we're going to speak to the use of social media and the prevalence of anxiety on our team as well as play some coping strategies and helpful resources call Princess decal for school we're going to speak to the general themes in the film or hopefully the answering some of the more commonly asked questions and anxiety and uses social media and its impact on teens and their mental health cameras will introduce themselves and throughout the presentation is that respond to commonly asked questions LOL this is Mick foot I am child clinical psychologist working at the high school this is my first year here I've been working in various other schools in about 2007 and before that was in private practice out of the colony Mill from 2002 about 2007 with a university Associates in psychology and I've been asked to record a blower vac related to anxiety and from the movies that you may be watching so I'm going to follow up with with that the scripture related to that so I guess I would just add that if anybody has any questions following any of this and then was interested you're welcome to email me a template m f o o t 29. Org and I'm happy to do I can but anyway I will follow up with this other video okay thanks bye hello I'm Lauren for sat I spent a number of years as the 4-H Youth Development educator in the region and is part of that job I did a lot of work with Community involvement and then retirement and stayed involved with things like after school program and I'm used to things and prevention collisions and that sort of thing today and participating in this panel discussions we talked about social media and the impact hi my name is Kendra. Lucci it's been a joy to work with all the families and staff at Westmoreland school is there school counselor for the last almost 10 years now being with the Bulldogs previously I was a school counselor at Keene high school for 6 years and at Winchester Elementary School for a year most importantly I'm a mother of an 11 and a 13 year old and a conversations and decision-making around social media are extremely relevant to our family as we navigate through teacher children how to be responsible digital citizens at the same time we are teaching them how to find a meaningful balance as we communicate via social media this has become more relevant as we Embrace remote learning and look for ways to stay connected to our friends when we are not able to see them in a brick-and-mortar building hello my name is Peter Seibert I'm the director of the YMCA Community Coalition do seu substance use I've been a YMCA director and coach in our community for the past 40 years and I want to thank you for inviting me to participate in this pan okay as promised I'm following up with a response to some of the questions regarding this specific thing around movie so and I guess I'll just start commonly asked question a good place to start this discussion is what is anxiety and what are some common warning signs I should look for in my in my cheap Victor Lee when I get there we can start by saying that anxiety is normal every experiences that it's an important emotion in our body's natural response to stress the feeling fear or apprehension about what's to come so can you buy things like the first day of school going to a job interview giving a speech because a lot of people to be fearful or nervous so a little bit of anxiety can be a good thing and can motivate your performance for example like a normal healthy amount of anxiety about an upcoming exam may lead to study harder and then maybe hopefully perform better but many of you I'm sure know too much anxiety can interfere with your daily life so and when I'm going to fear worry starts to get in the way of living your life that's when you might consider it an anxiety disorder so it's really about the interference with everyday tasks some signs of anxiety things to look for feeling nervous Restless or 10 have Nicole Dean controlling the worry physical responses like increased heart rate rapid breathing sweating things like that trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry trouble sleeping GI problems not like stomach aches and things like that and having the averred the urge to avoid things that might trigger anxiety and note that you know we all experienced some of these is right so but with these are seen for several weeks or they're getting worse over time that's when you might think about seeking professional help and absolutely if it starts to be things when you or your struggling things like wearing too much in such of this really is cheering with school work relationships are other parts of life feeling like it's just really difficult to control and overwhelming you getting on top of you struggling with stop medication Subway like alcohol or use or other mental health concerns along with an anxiety or for sure having suicidal thoughts or behaviors and that's something you definitely would want to speak immediately so that is the response to that so so the first question I'm going to respond to is when talking about social media use we are often asked what is driving social media why is its use on the rise and why doesn't seem to be so addictive when we consider social media used by all of us of whether it's adults teens or two it's important to consider both of user the source for users adults are different than teens the Adolescent brain is still developing the first part of the brain that functions would do students stimulus during adolescence is emotional Center rather than the Thinking Center that means the teen brains are more easily influenced and more susceptible to have it for me behaviors it's also important to think about the design or some social media there a designing platforms that understand is that it can be very very influential on teens life there designing Mia programs to capture your attention and keep you there they want you to constantly check your screen that's how the social media platform companies Facebook Instagram or SnapChat make more money this can create psychological Cravings similar to alcohol nicotine or drug Cravings in fact research has shown that brain scans of someone that is addicted to social media are almost identical to a scan of somebody that's addicted to alcohol or to another drug when you are on a social media and receive a like a share or a favorable reaction to a post it triggers the release of dopamine in your brain the dopamine is the same chemical is released when you're doing something you really enjoy for when someone wins money on the slot machine or takes a bite of chocolate or lights up a cigarette for use as a drug the more you rewarded the more you want to spend time on social media even if it is negatively affecting other aspects of your life and with a teen brain where the emotional Center exp it is easier for these Rewards become crazy so with the team the cycle of an unhealthy relationship with social media might look like this when you feel lonely or depressed or stressed use social media more often it may be a thief from boy what a feel connected to others but using social media more often increases the feelings of a man in adequacy dissatisfaction and isolation as well as fomo fear of missing out on something these feelings can deepen your mood and actually worsen your symptoms of depression or anxiety or stress which causes you to the new social media even more often and it just becomes a repetitive download cycle if you wrecked I just had an in yourself or in your team there are some things you can do schedule and take regular breaks from your phone or device throughout the day to avoid Temptation leave it in another room or in a different space while you take your break finding use other ways to connect with others whether it's online or offline in a more meaningful way work and actually be a two-way conversation and ask yourself regularly how you feel after spending I'm on the social media platform if you find a particular social media account makes you upset or anxious or depressed you might want to unfollow that account so yes social media can be a great tool for in touch with friends and loved ones especially during the cycling time but consider how it makes you feel if spending time on social media is making you feel good about yourself isn't making you feel good about yourself steps to limit its use often the question of how is it that being more connected has left us feeling more disconnected comes up when we talk about social media to answer that question and we have to look at the research shows that are using social media is related to our feelings of loneliness depression and Z lower self-esteem social anxiety and so on so it's ironic that something that was intended to bring us closer together is actually creating more isolation than ever I think one of the big reasons why social media creates disconnect and loneliness is because it's constantly asking us to compare ourselves with others it allows you to continuously compass your own popularity with that of your peers or experience the fear of missing out or fomo and we all have that same deep fear of being wrong and being criticized your nature feels small so far the word Adidas this is incredibly difficult these experiences in real life and in social media causes state of disconnection Bones from our cells and from other people so it's easy to see how technology use Kent take the place of the more traditional meaningful social interaction sure there are times when we are able to connect and feel included with family and friends experiences but for many people much of the time social media only provides a measuring stick Schwan's popularity leading not to connection but two major disconnection loneliness and alienation so yes spending too much time engaging with social media can actually make you feel more lonely and isolated and Jasper 8 mental health problems such as anxiety and depression some things you can do right now to create more meaningful connections with others connect spiritually with your friends through FaceTime or Facebook Messenger while you celebrate good share a story while you make dinner you can even host and join a live watch party the idea is to interact in a way that promotes healthy feelings and meaningful connection when we think about anxiety maybe one of the most common questions people ask is what tools can be used to help us manage our anxiety and first of all I have to say anxiety is part of most people's lives we all experience it from time to time but if your anxiety continues in addition to counseling there maybe some tools you can use to help manage your anxiety one thing you might try is to identify your triggers times when you experience anxiety are those Publix taking a test meeting new people when you can identify some of your triggers you might be able to build a plan a strategy for when you're faced with those Triggers on a day-to-day basis in addition to identifying your triggers there other tools you can use to manage anxiety tools like breathe practice shifting your focus from your anxiety to your breathing using something like a stress ball removing yourself from gospel anxiety-provoking situation and getting more exercise increasing your activity level eating healthier sleeping better maybe reducing your caffeine intake but above all remember don't beat yourself up this is is something that is not your fault this is something that most people encounter and this is something that you can get through another question that often comes up when talking about anxiety is how are they treated what can be done about it so obviously this is a big theme of the film angst and we are certainly seeing more anxiety among teens and kids in general would say in the last decade or so so appreciate this question because I think many people may not be aware of how treatable anxiety actually is I wouldn't I wouldn't say it's easy and you know try something cause us to try something new instead of selves into coping skills that were not used to but for sure extremely common and very treatable of the mental health Disorder so you know when the research said there's no single cause of something like General anxiety disorder normally multiple factors come into play in the development of g a d but some of the common things might be genetic disposition so whether your parents are there other relatives have had it brain chemistry family background social influence life experience things like these and for many people anxiety can be treated with therapy interventions medication can be helpful for some as well and that's often tried if therapy alone is not enough and often they find it actually therapy and medication combination is the most most most helpful CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy the common form of therapy teaches specific thinking skills around thinking and behavior being aware of your thoughts and what what to do to observe push back against some of them people challenge Bishop they're anxious negative thoughts gain control over their anxiety to some degree at least relaxed problem solved the gradual thing and keeps it from being overwhelming cuz you don't want to people into the deep end and this is all discussed in the film angst the gradually exposing yourself to a scary thing whether it's going to school or being in a social situation but that kind of gradual exposure is the most effective way to treat the anxiety I think we've all been there and wanted to avoid something at one time but for sure this is true for me as well but avoiding the thing that you're afraid can only cause it to us disorder Grosso that's a trap that often parents get in for their kids which is I don't like to see my kid into stress I'm going to help them avoid these anxious you know these anxiety-provoking situations that can unintentionally sort of reinforced things that make anxiety worse which obviously don't want learning shift or negative thoughts increasing relaxation skills to help reduce anxiety not avoiding the causes not avoiding what causes us to feel anxiety or among the more time couple steps that we can take and the therapist can absolutely help you or your child or teen with taking these steps so okay thank you very much question that continues to come up for many of us is the impact of social media and ourselves and on our team it's important to realize his social media could be affecting our own mental health as well as the mental health everyone is different so there's no specific amount of time or frequency in checking for update for number of post that indicate that they use is unhealthy the indicator to use is how time spent on social media you move in other areas of your life for example social media use may be a problem if it means that you're neglecting face-to-face relationships you were distracted from work at school or at leaves you feeling upset or depressed and if you use it just because you're bored or lonely it'll post something to make others jealous or upset you might want to think about your social media habits there are some indicators that might point to having a very unhealthy relationship with social me here's some examples if you are constantly turning the social media because you feel that others may be having more fun than you finding that you're comparing yourself in an unfavorable way with others that are on social media dancing cyberbullying or worrying that you have no control over the things people post about you being distracted at school or while at work and taking time to make pose or get comments or respond to others quickly before fit in the past that you were actually rigidly on finding that you have no time for some quiet time and self-reflection because every spare minute is spent on your social media platforms realizing that you check social media. fasting at night the first thing in the morning or even when you wake up in the night in fact this isn't contributing cause the team's not getting enough sleep because every time you're constantly waking to check on their social feeds in case might be missing something spending more time on social media than in face-to-face interactions with friends or family this is a Tuffy right now since we're fall online more often in this time of pandemic it's currently a safe way to connect with others however we also need to spend positive time with the people we're at home with so if you're spending time with family and find that you were constantly checking social media that should be a red flag and a big red flag is if you are feeling worse about yourself or your anxiety or depression is getting worse I guess the most important thing to remember the social media is a tool but only one of the many tools we should be how to connect socially with each other and it should never become so encompassing that one has no time for themselves for self-reflection or just some quiet time or to do other things that one enjoys thank you creating balance in our lives when it comes to social media to use is extremely important but finding effective ways to do that can be a challenge we do have a choice when it comes to the way that we use social media and yes there are absolutely Arlo things that we can do to create more balance in our lives with it much of the hook that social media has on us is that all the notifications and alerts make it looks so enticing and a media as if it needs my attention now so some of those chips involve minimizing all of these notifications in such you may find that the more you are without it the easier it becomes so consider starting with a few of these tip and then after several days you may find that you're willing to try a few one thing that you can start with his go grayscale again those colorful icons give our brains shiny rewards every time we look at it but you can set your whole phone to grayscale this will remove the positive reinforcements that our brains get from. another tip is to turn off all of your notifications except from people that you know try to avoid leaving bad habits on the home screen and other words try keeping only tools on your home screen for example the apps for tasks like maps and Camera calendar calculator notes move the social media apps off the first page and into folders or even better logout of social media at it as another step and this can decrease the likelihood going on the apps in the first place aren't your device outside of your bedroom get a separate alarm clock in your bedroom and change and change your routine and charge your phone in the other room so you can wake up without getting sucked into your phone before you even get out of bed or simply set your phone down if you don't treat your phone as an essential to your daily life you won't wire your brain to think it is one start with baby steps like leaving your phone at home will you go for a walk I think that we can include and do is keep our phone out of our hands when we're speaking with someone keeping our phone in another room when we're doing work and calling a friend or family member instead of text are some of the resources tell both of you for your student and how do you access them first of all a loving caring present parent is one of the most valuable resources being there listen and normalize your child's feelings is hugely important especially in these uncertain times we need to check in with our children often open yourself up to those conversation share your experiences but if you find that these feelings of anxiety and depression are continuing and if you find that they are becoming worse then you should seek the care of professional Mental Health Services in a place you might want to start during school is the school counseling staff or a teacher you might also make an appointment with your family physician they can take a look at that and may be prescribed medication if needed in the Keene area we have great Counseling Services provided through Monadnock family services and through Maps in addition to the services becoming more active in positive asset building activities is critically so when we do open things up again getting involved in activities at the Y moving company sports clubs abuse groups that are through the school or places like the library and even during this time the YMCA Community Coalition has started a youth group called The Monadnock youth Coalition and we meet weekly Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. through zoom and this may be a way to help stay connect still make new friends to share with somebody some adult to caring
