Guidance services are available for every student in the school. Your child's counselor transitions him/her into the middle school and continues that support throughout the seventh and eighth grades. Spending three years with a class allows the counselor an opportunity to know the youngsters and their families, and to assist in many types of problem solving throughout the child's middle school experience.
Guidance services include group and individual educational planning, special education case management, academic monitoring and encouragement, crisis intervention involving school, home and social concerns, and networking with and referral to community agencies which offer child and family support.
Early adolescence can be stressful for parents as well as the child. Our guidance staff is here to assist students, teachers and parents in finding solutions to their problems. Sometimes a phone call is all that will be needed to answer a question. At other times a parent/teacher conference may be necessary, or occasionally even a referral to a community agency is deemed appropriate.
Your child's counselor is available for consultation regarding concerns you may have about academic and social/emotional needs.

The Instructional Media Center is a key support and service area that lies at the heart of an effective school educational program. It is an integral part of the total instruction and learning process. A primary goal is for the IMC to be a pleasant and productive place for students and faculty, while providing some of the essential materials and activities for a successful middle school experience. Both individuals and classes are encouraged to use the facility for maximum benefit. An automated library system is in place to provide support for the school's curriculum.
BackSpecial Education Services are provided to students who are identified as educationally disabled in accordance with their Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Each Cluster at KMS has Special Education Resource Staff assigned to the team of teachers. Service models vary according to student needs, but primarily services are delivered in inclusive settings such as regular classrooms.
The Keene Middle School Evaluation Team determines eligibility for Special Education. The IEP/Placement Team determines an appropriate Special Education Program and Placement.
For questions related to Special Education Services, you may call: Megan Battaglia,
Special Services Coordinator at 352-5830.
Services are provided to help students achieve and maintain a high level of personal health. The school nurse is a resource person who is available for parent and teacher conferences and counseling. The school nurse also works closely with the administration regarding absenteeism. Students who are ill must report to the nurse's office. Students may be dismissed after parents are notified.
BackA cumulative health record is maintained on each child, K-12. This includes the required physical examination and documentation of state mandated immunizations (RSA 200:38). A complete listing of immunization requirements can be obtained from the school nurse. Please note that 2 doses of Measles containing vaccine is required for children in grades 7-12. A tetanus booster is required if it has been 10 years since the last dose of tetanus toxoid containing vaccine.
A Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine is required for children entering grade 6, 7 & 8. If your child has already had Chicken Pox disease, parents must provide the school nurse with a signed, dated note, documenting the month and year when she/he had the disease.
A child may be admitted to school under “conditional enrollment” with documentation of incomplete immunization, but an appointment date for the next dose is necessary to keep the child in school. That date shall serve as the suspension date until immunizations are complete.
The School Health Services program strives to keep healthy children healthy. To that end, we must exclude students with contagious conditions such as but not limited to:
Chicken pox - must remain home for one week after first skin lesions appear
Strep infection - must remain home for 24 hours after treatment has started
Students will remain at home with all other communicable
diseases per NH State Law. The school nurse will determine when
it is safe for the child to return to school.
Medication to be taken during school time must be kept in the health office. All prescription medications require authorization from a physician and must be sent in the original container. All nonprescription medications, such as Tylenol or aspirin are also to be stored in the health office if these are sent to school with students. Written permission from the parent/guardian must be sent to the nurse for any student to take these medications and it may be written so that it covers the entire year.
In accordance with School Board Policy #514, all students in grade seven will be given a physical screening by the school physician or the parent/guardian must supply the school with a documented report by a private physician. If the use of a private physician is planned, please schedule the screening as early as possible and have the physician send the report to the Keene Middle School Health Office. Heights, weights, blood pressures, and scoliosis screenings are done each school year. A documented private scoliosis screening by a family physician is an acceptable substitute. Appropriate referrals may be made by the school nurse to parents and/or physicians. Vision and hearing screenings will also be given to students in grade seven by the school nurse. Students shall be eligible for interscholastic athletics only if there is a medical statement on file in the health office which certifies that the pupil has passed a physical examination prior to the start of that students involvement in athletics. Further athletic involvement in subsequent years requires parents to fill out a health questionnaire and return it to the school nurse. Any student with a significant illness or injury may require an additional physician's examination.
The Board of Education recognizes no legal responsibility for insuring pupils. The Board of Education, through its Finance Committee and Administration, will annually select an insurance company to provide pupil insurance protection on a voluntary basis for pupils. Pupil insurance protection will be made available at the beginning of the school year through the schools, at the expense of parents. All pupils who are to participate in any sports activity, interscholastic or intramural, that is not required as part of the regular school day program must have pupil insurance before participation, or the parents will sign a form indicating that such insurance was offered and declined by them, and that the school officials and staff will not be held responsible for accidents incurred through such participation.
