We believe that the primary purpose of grade reporting is to inform the student and parent of the academic progress being made. Grade reporting provides a means for teachers, parents, and students to work together in providing a more effective program of education for each child.
We believe that grades should be determined according to individual abilities, course objectives, and achievement required at each level.
We believe that a student's progress should not be considered on the basis of where he "should" be, but on how far he has progressed from "where he started".
The Grade Philosophy Committee has recommended the numerical equivalents found in our grading system as a guide in determining the proper letter grade.
Outside work and independent study play an important role in the total program. the amount of homework assigned is dependent upon the nature of the subject and the ability of the pupil.
Homework serves valid purposes when it provides essential practice in needed skills, trains pupils in good work habits, affords opportunities for increasing self-direction, enriches and extends the school experience, helps students budget time, brings pupils into contact with out-of-school learning resources and promotes growth in responsibility.
Report Cards are issued every quarter to notify parents of student progress. The cards are given to the students, who are required to return the signed portion to their homeroom teacher. All courses are graded quarterly except for those courses meeting once per six day cycle.
BackThere are two Honor Rolls at Keene Middle School, both published on a quarterly basis. To achieve Honors a student must have an average of "B" or better. To achieve High Honors a student must have an "A" average. To compute your son/daughter's Honor Roll standing:
1. Convert the letter grade to honor roll points using the grading system.>BR>
2. Multiply the assigned points by the number of times the course meets in a cycle.
3. Total the weighted points thus found for all graded subjects.
4. Divide the weighted point total by the number of class periods
(exclude study halls and ungraded subjects) attended by your child
in a regular six day schedule.
5. Compare your result with the Honor Roll Point Schedule. An average of 11.0
or greater is required for High Honors. Any average from 8.0 up to, but not
including 11.0, is Honors.
A grade of C+ or below, in any subject, automatically excludes a student from either Honor Roll.
| GRADE POINTS | RANGE | HONOR ROLL |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 98-100 | 12 |
| A HIGH HONORS | 94-97 | 11 |
| A- | 90-93 | 10 |

| C+ | 78-79 | 6 |
| C | 74-77 | 5 |

Academic warnings may be issued by teachers at any time during the marking period when a student's grade drops to a C- or below.
Progress reports are given to all students by their core teachers at the midpoint of each marking period.
Any student who receives two "F's" in one subject during the last two marking periods, or fails the course any three out of four marking periods, will automatically fail the course. Failing the equivalent of two core subjects will represent grounds for retention. Any other combinations of grades will be considered separately and could result in either passing or failing.
BackTeachers may recognize individuals with a Cardinal Award. Recipients are considered for their motivation, effort, consideration for their fellow classmates and teachers, and total positive attitude. Each student being recognized will be given a Cardinal Award, which may then be taken to the grade office for a KMS pencil. Individuals, who get the award signed by a parent, and returned to the grade office, will also be eligible for the monthly drawing conducted by the student council.
BackAn incomplete grade at the end of the marking period must be made up within ten school days. Unfinished work after that time period will not be counted for credit and the student's grade will change from incomplete to the actual grade earned.
BackIf a child is going to be out of school for three or more days because of illness, homework may be obtained by calling the appropriate grade office. Please call as early as possible and allow one school day for preparation.
BackIf you fail any subjects during a marking period or receive two or more failing grades on your Progress Report or Academic Warning, you will be suspended from participation (practices &/or games) for no less than five school days. You may resume participation in the activity only after you have demonstrated improvement and permission is granted by the teacher(s), who issued the failing grade(s). If you fail a class which meets only one quarter, the suspension will be for the five day minimum time period. The suspension will begin when you are notified by the Assistant Principal for Athletics, the Athletic manager or the team's/club's coach or advisor. A student must be in attendance for at least half of the school day in order to participate in any practices or games on that day.
Any student suspended (in-school or out-of-school) is not eligible to participate until he/she has completed a subsequent day in good standing. Those students receiving Administrative Detentions are ineligible for school athletic transportation on the day of the detentions. Any alternative transportation must be approved in advance by the Assistant Principal for Athletics or the Principal.
