Expand/ Contract

Fifth Grade - Mathematics - Katherine Fisk

Mathematics is taught from a problem solving perspective. The students are taught specific problem solving strategies and how to use them. Each unit is accompanied by problems that challenge students’ thinking about and apply the mathematical topics being studied.

Hands-on manipulatives are used whenever possible to help the students ‘visualize’ both mathematics operations and problems. The students are expected to move from the hands-on concrete materials to a connecting stage, then to abstract representation and standard notation.

There is a strong emphasis on communication in mathematics. Students are expected to justify their reasoning both orally and in writing.

Only by teaching students to THINK about mathematics can we prepare them for the unknown future ahead.
