Fourth Grade - Henry Bailly
Welcome
to the 2007-2008 school year!
Fourth
grade is a very important year for students as they leave the
primary grades and prepare to take on the challenges of the middle
school. We will be spending a lot of time on study skills, organization,
listening skills, and responsibility. New this year is the implementation
of binders and “official” assignment books.
In fourth
grade students work in small groups, independently, and as a class,
depending on the activity. Project based activities and manipulatives
are used as much as possible.
The topics
of study fourth graders will focus on include:
Math- place value, computation, measurement,
geometry, fractions, decimals, graphing, probability, and problem-solving
techniques.
Science- energy (heat, light, and
sound), human body, land and water
Social Studies-geography skills,
states and capitals, New Hampshire history, famous people with
New Hampshire connections, and state government
Reading- word attack skills, comprehension
strategies, genres of literature (historical fiction, realistic
fiction, mysteries, fantasy, folk tales) reading for information
(non-fiction)
Writing- paragraph development, descriptive
writing, writing a report (research, note cards, rough draft,
final draft)
Assessment
techniques include teacher observation, quizzes, and unit tests.
Fourth graders receive letter grades on their trimester report
cards.
