First Grade - Rachael Fowler
Greetings,
and welcome to First Grade! I am very excited for a year full
of fun and lots of learning!
Here is a list of some of the units and concepts that
the first graders will be exploring this year:
Math: number sense, addition
and subtraction, algebra and functions, measurement, geometry,
reasoning, data analysis, and problem solving.
Language Arts: We will be
working for 120 minutes a day on various reading and language
arts concepts such as: phonemic awareness, spelling (Cast-A-Spell),
writing, word work, sight words, along with silent reading and
read aloud.
The Cast-A-Spell spelling
program involves phonemic awareness as well as visual memory training.
This helps the students to learn strategies to spell sight words
with success.
Science: weather, organisms
and animals, and energy.
Social Studies: map skills,
calendar(days, months and seasons), important events, currents
events, famous Americans.
The students will have the opportunities to work not
only individually, but also in whole class groups and small groups.
Students will be asked to create projects and share their individual
ideas with others. Guided discovery, hands on activities and direct
instruction will help the students to learn.
I am looking forward to a great school year and to getting
to know the students and their families! Please feel free to email
me with and questions at rfowler@sau29.org.
