SCHOOL COUNSELING
|
| The school counselor is available to all students at Fuller School. The school
counselor works closely with staff and parents to help achieve the goals stated
in the Fuller School philosophy. The elementary school counseling program
is preventative and developmental in nature. Our multifaceted program consists
of these major components: 1. Individual Counseling: Children receive one-to-one counseling when parents,
teachers, and the counselor feel that it is appropriate. Children can also
refer themselves. Children could see the counselor for a variety of reasons,
such as problems with peers, problems at home, or difficulty being successful
learners. 2. Small-Group Counseling: Groups are formed when themes (such as divorce,
death, motivation) or common needs (such as friendship skills, relaxation
training, self-concept development) are found to be areas where counseling
can help. 3. Consultation: Teachers and parents can consult the school counselor when
they have concerns about a child’s emotional and academic development.
Parents may contact the counselor about school progress, behavior management,
social adjustment, health concerns, family problems, and arranging referrals
to outside agencies. The school counselor plans to provide parent education
opportunities during the evening and daytime. 5. Coordinates the Standardized Testing Program: This includes state and district testing programs. 6. Transition/Placement: The school counselor helps with the transition of
preschoolers into kindergarten and the 5th graders into Keene Middle School.
Also, the counselor helps with placement decisions. 7. Coordination of the school-wide Peer Mediation Program. 8. Supplementary Clubs: Possibilities include Kids on The Block. Mrs. Kristie Quail
